College students, we want to let you in on a secret that many adults don’t want to admit. Many of them don’t feel like adults. On any given day they fluctuate between feeling like they’re on top of their game and feeling like they’re just keeping their heads above water. They go to the gym on Monday, only to succumb to a bag of Fritos® Honey BBQ Flavor Twists* on Tuesday. They make an insightful comment in a meeting, only to later realize that they did so with something in their teeth left over from lunch. They budget and save money to take the family on a vacation, only to get hit with a car repair bill because they should have been better at keeping up with preventative maintenance.
When you’re younger, people often think that adulthood is some sort of destination where you’ll inevitably arrive. There’s a picture in your head of this successful, confident person who is very self-aware of their adultness. While you may be able to live up to some of your expectations, there will inevitably be times when you feel like you barely have your act together.
Here’s why: You’ll learn that adulthood is not a destination but rather a process that we (yes you, and us, and every other person who’s reached biological maturity) are all going through. And if we’re all being honest with ourselves and with you, the best thing any of us can say about adulting is that we’re all doing our best at it.
Being an adult is challenging because life is complicated. It isn’t about using empty phrases like, “Is it wine-o-clock yet?” when you're stressed out. Real adulting means that we face our lives head on and honestly as we navigate both the great times and the challenging ones.
With this mindset, we launched the ASU Adulting 101 blog at the start of the fall 2017 semester. Through the articles on the blog, it is our hope that the recommendations, tips and insights we share help you go through the process of adulthood with a little less angst or worry about where you are in this process.
A wise person once said, “Wherever you are, that’s where you are.” That person was clearly an adult. Don’t know anything about personal finance? Don’t be embarrassed. We’ll post articles from experts in the field. Having doubts that you’re “college material”? We’ll share resources around the university that can help you academically - and tips to help you reframe your thinking toward a healthier mindset.
Unless you’ve somehow ignored all of ASU’s marketing efforts, you’ve undoubtedly heard the ASU slogan, “learn to thrive.” When we talk about learning how to thrive, we’re actually talking about adulting. We’re talking about providing you the tools you need to successfully live a personally fulfilling life. But as adults with your best interests at heart, our goal is to help you, not hype you. Though we aren’t going to tell you that the process of adulthood is easy, we’re here to say that we believe that you can adult successfully. You have a huge network of resources available to you at ASU to do just that, and the goal of ASU Adulting 101 is to put those resources at your fingertips.
*They are amazing.
Sun Devils turn to ASU Adulting 101 to learn (some of) the things not taught in class. Not sure about how to do something? Need to connect with an expert? We got you.
